Description:

Burkina Faso, 19th century. A small cast bronze bell of conical form with a looped suspension handle, produced by the lost-wax (cire perdue) process. The surface carries abstract relief decoration in horizontal registers, now extensively softened through long handling and use, though the patterning remains legible in raking light. A cluster of globular forms — possibly calabashes or fruit — projects from the lower body, suggesting fertility or abundance symbolism. The warm brown patina with traces of green oxidation is consistent with age and genuine use. The overall form and casting technique are characteristic of the bronze-working traditions of Burkina Faso, where cast metal objects served both ceremonial and prestige functions within court and ritual contexts. Size: 4.25”H (10.8cm).
