Description:

Burma, Myanmar, ca. 18th - 19th century. Burma (Myanmar), 19th century CE. Carved alabaster Buddha, seated in “calling the earth to witness” position, wearing a one-shouldered dhoti, and originally having a pointed flame atop head. Relief carved and incised facial features, with eyes gazing downwards, a slight smile and elongated ears. He sits on an integral carved lotus petal base. Dark brown and black painted dhoti and headdress with red highlights on the base.

Alabaster carving of Buddhist figures was a hallmark of the Burmese artistic tradition, particularly associated with the workshops of Mandalay, which produced figures of exceptional delicacy and spiritual refinement during the 19th century Size: 11.25”H x 6.375”W (28.6 x 16.2cm).

Provenance: Ex. Whisnat Galleries, New Orleans, Louisiana, acquired 11-19-2016.
