Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. early 20th century CE. A striking brass sculpture of the Buddha in the Mandalay style, featuring a gentle smile and downcast, enamel-inlaid eyes. Billowing folds of a robe drape over his left shoulder and arm, while his long-lobed ears, extending to his shoulders, symbolize his renunciation of worldly wealth. Mandalay Buddha statues are characterized by a distinctive broad band across the forehead, with hair styled in tight curls that encompass a prominent ushnisha, absent of a lotus finial. This figure is depicted with hands in the bhumisparsa mudra, or "earth witness" mudra, symbolizing the moment of his awakening as he overcame the demon Mara, claiming the earth as his witness to enlightenment. Size: 11.25" L x 8.5" W x 13.5" H (28.6 cm x 21.6 cm x 34.3 cm)

Provenance: private Culver City, California, USA collection, by inheritance, collected 1970s to 1980s
