Lot 19
Southeast Asia, possibly Burma / Indonesia, Bali, ca. early to mid 19th century CE. An intricately carved length of elephant ivory featuring a remarkable openwork design of scrolling floral vines entwined with two fierce bhoma- or kirtimukha-like guardian figures. This pierced lattice motif overlays the solid ivory core beneath, a technically demanding carving approach that speaks to the extraordinary skill of its maker. At the tip is a bust of a human figure with an upward-turned gaze, adding a focal point. Such openwork carving was traditionally used across Asia for decorative objects, including weapon hilts, containers, and furniture finials. The presence of grotesque guardian faces and style of the vegetal ornamentation suggests strong Hindu-Buddhist stylistic influence. Size: 8" L x 2" W (20.3 cm x 5.1 cm); 9.5" H (24.1 cm) on included custom stand.
