Constantine IX Monomachos reigned during a period of constant intrigue and upheaval in the Byzantine court. He was chosen by the Empress Zoe to be her husband and co-emperor despite being previously exiled for conspiring against her ex-husband, Emperor Michael IV the Paphlagonian.
