Description:

Near East, Byzantine, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. A stunning matching pair of gold earrings showcasing luxurious materials and careful craftsmanship, each suspended from a long gold wire hook and centered by a crescent-shaped element filled with scrolling openwork filigree. Below, two articulated drops hang from small loops, formed as rectangular bezel settings holding vivid green emeralds, followed by slender gold tubular elements. The composition continues with tiny pearl spacers framing chatoyant oval sapphire beads, creating a refined contrast of color and movement. A timeless design that reflects the sophistication of early Byzantine jewelry. Size: 2.25" L x 0.5" W (5.7 cm x 1.3 cm); total combined weights: 8.5 grams

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private Vienna, Austria collection, acquired between 1980-2000
