Byzantine Empire, Marcian, 450 to 457 CE, Constantinople Mint. Gold solidus. Obverse: D N MARCIA - NVS P F AVG, helmeted bust facing, diademed with frontal ornament, cuirassed, holding spear and shield decorated with horseman riding down enemy. Reverse: VICTORI - A AVGGG, Victory standing left supporting long jeweled cross; in right field, star; in exergue, CONOB. RIC 510 , officina E. Marcian ruled the eastern empire and had a relatively peaceful reign. He began his career as a very successful soldier. Marcian was very capable ruler who left a plentiful treasury upon his death. RIC 510. Size: 0.75" W (1.9 cm); 4.5 grams
