Ancient Near East, early Byzantine Empire, ca. late 5th to 7th century CE. A finely crafted silver ring engraved with the Virgin and Child, flanked by two petite crosses formee. Framed by rounded globules at the shoulders, the oval bezel's surface bears a smooth, silvery patina. The figures are rendered in delicate linear incision, the Virgin shown in a long robe with her head inclined toward the Child, who rests upon her left arm. Rings of this kind served as intimate expressions of devotion, functioning as both adornment and protective talisman during an era when Christian faith found form in miniature, personal works of art. - Condition: Dark patina and natural toning throughout. Light surface pitting and minor scratches consistent with age. Band slightly ovoid but intact and wearable. Engraved image remains clear with good overall detail.
