Description:

Pre-Columbian, North America, Arkansas/Louisiana/Texas, Caddo culture, ca. 900 to 1400 CE. A hand-built earthenware jar of considerable formal ingenuity, its globular body divided into bold melon-like lobes by applied vertical ribs, each panel filled with finely incised herringbone and chevron patterning worked into the leather-hard clay. Two encircling registers of punctate impressions articulate the constricted neck, and the rim flares outward into a pinched quatrefoil profile, a hallmark of Caddo ceramic refinement. The dark, smoke-mottled surface speaks to an open or smothered firing atmosphere typical of the tradition. In form and ornament, this jar aligns with vessel types documented in the Great Bend aspect and Red River valley ceramic traditions of the trans-Mississippi South, where lobed and ribbed jars of this elaboration appear most frequently in ceremonial contexts among the sophisticated agricultural communities of the Caddo cultural sphere. Size: 6.2" D x 6.3" H (15.7 cm D x 16.0 cm H)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA Collection; ex-private Denver, Colorado, USA collection; ex-private New York, USA collection
