Description:

West Africa, Cameroon, Bamum or Tikar culture, ca. 20th century CE. A pair of pottery pygmy guardians, also known as house guardians, portly anthropomorphic figures with wildly exaggerated facial features and impressed markings across their bodies and faces. The brown, male figure's arms and ankles have separate bracelet bangles, and their shoulders have large openings / vent holes that lead into their hollow bodies. The black figure wears a small necklace with single white bone bead. Adorable figures that are much more amusing than threatening! Size: 4" W x 8" H (10.2 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995
