Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italy, Apulia, Canosan, ca. 4th century BCE. A tall pottery volute krater rising on a flared foot, its shoulders surmounted by upright volute handles decorated with painted rosettes. The vessel is coated in a rich red slip and enlivened with added white paint forming scrolling patterns and figural decoration. One side presents a striding warrior, shield raised, enclosed within a tympanum-like frame beneath a pediment, suggesting an architectural or sacred setting. On the reverse, swirling vegetal motifs and curvilinear designs create a lively surface contrast. Canosan pottery was produced for funerary contexts in the Hellenistic period, often distinguished by its applied ornament and use of added pigments. This example reflects the martial imagery and bold decorative vocabulary favored in Apulian workshops, where Greek mythological themes were adapted for local Italic patrons. Size: 7" L x 8.5" Diameter x 16.6" H (17.8 cm x 21.6 cm x 42.2 cm)

The depiction of the armed warrior speaks both to heroic ideals and the commemoration of martial valor in death. With its grand volute handles, painted ornament, and evocative warrior scene, this krater embodies the fusion of Greek ceramic tradition and South Italian funerary ritual, serving as both a functional mixing vessel and a commemorative monument for the tomb.
