Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia to Ecuador (Carchi) region, Narino Highlands, ca. 1250 CE. A hand-built and highly-burnished pottery bowl with a concave foot, thick walls, a deep interior cavity, and a thin, rounded rim. The exterior displays a decorative register of cream-hued linear bars atop a brown ground. The interior of the vessel boasts a dense motif of circular, linear, and triangular motifs - each panel of which separated by thick red bars - and the center of the basin exhibits an abstract monkey figure with a circular head, sinuous limbs, and a slender tail. All the zoomorphic and geometric embellishments are presented in vibrant red, brown, and creamy-yellow hues via the Narino artisans' signature negative resist technique. Size: 8" W x 3.375" H (20.3 cm x 8.6 cm).
