Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Mayan Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. Carved from volcanic basalt, this is a fascinating ancient depiction of a seated figure, cross-legged and with long fingered hands resting on the knees. The figure wears a high waisted skirt and a large headdress or coiffure. Who does this figure represent? A noble person, a shaman? The face, smoothed by time, looks mutely at us through the centuries. Size: 4.45" W x 9.5" H (11.3 cm x 24.1 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-lifetime collection of doctors Saul Tuttman and Gregory Siskind, New York City, USA
