Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Chihuahua, Paquime region, Casas Grandes., ca. 1200 - 1450 CE. A rare and truly remarkable example of a pottery wedding jar, boasting the traditional shape of 2 chambers, joined together via a central canal as well as a bridge handle. Meticulously hand-painted in red and black pigment atop a beige ground, the vessel is enveloped in mesmerizing designs of stepped, spiral, geometric, and zigzag motifs, as well as parrot designs that adorn the handle and anthropomorphic and avian figures near each rim. The two pots of this vessel were created for the happy couple, one for the bride and one for the groom with the arched handle representing their unity. Parrots were also important elements of Casas Grandes visual culture, as the animal was highly prized for its feathers which were traded to the Northern Pueblos.
