Lot 324
Pre-Columbian, North Mexico, Chihuahua, Casas Grandes (Paquime), ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A hand-built Ramos style pottery vessel in a fantastical human and bird form, with motifs painted throughout. The body rests on a rounded but stable base, slipped in a creamy buff hue, the red and black pigments applied in mesmerizing geometric and linear patterns that are precise and perfectly balanced, repeating across the surface. The verso contains the tab like tail of the bird, and the front is molded in high relief with a parrot's head, and above a panel with a stylized human visage. It seems as if the person is riding atop the parrot or perhaps symbolizes a transformative shamanic state. Brightly colored birds, such as macaws, were prized for their feathers, and used as offerings - indeed, evidence has been found at the Paquime site that the Casas Grandes people acquired macaws from southern Mexico and bred the birds in special aviaries complete with warming furnaces! Size: 7" L x 5.5" Diameter x 6.75" H (17.8 cm x 14 cm x 17.1 cm)
