Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Middle Cauca Region, Caldas Complex, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A delightful pottery figure of a nude male depicted in a stylized form typical of Cauda culture. Standing atop short legs with flared feet, the figure displays a thick, rectangular body with a tapered phallus extending from the bottom and a pair of petite, looped arms that double as lug handles flanking the otherwise indistinguishable shoulder. All is capped by a semicircular head displaying slit-form eyes, a curved, naturalistic nose, and plump closed lips. Pairs of drill holes are placed at the base of the neck and on either side of the phallus. Figures like this were included alongside vessels and metal ornaments in shaft and chamber tombs - perhaps as guardians or companions for the deceased. Stylized figures like this one come from the Cauca River drainage, and are called slab figures. Most are male, making this a rare find! Size: 2.6" L x 5.1" W x 8.6" H (6.6 cm x 13 cm x 21.8 cm)

Provenance: private Stone Mountain, Georgia, USA collection, acquired in Colombia in the 1970s
