Description:

Cecilia Mayr (Brazilian, b. 1955). "Relics - CVII" mixed media painting on paper, n.d. Signed at lower right and titled at lower left. In "Relics - CVII", Cecilia Mayr excavates memory as though it were an archaeological site, revealing layers of texture, line, and form that speak to both presence and erosion. The composition bristles with rhythmic marks and embedded fragments - scored arcs, mechanical components, and graphite slashes - all set within a dense field of red, rust, and violet. These gestures emerge through a weathered matrix, edged in a raw, earthy bronze wash that frames the work like an exposed wall painting or ceremonial tablet. As with much of Mayr's work, this piece suggests a fusion of the organic and the industrial, the intuitive and the deliberate. Trained in fine art and philosophy in Brazil and shaped by years spent in the American Southwest, Mayr imbues her surfaces with a tension between spontaneity and structure. Size of painting: 11" W x 12.5" H (27.9 cm x 31.8 cm); of frame: 27" W x 29.75" H (68.6 cm x 75.6 cm)

Her background in animation and graphic design informs the dynamism of the image, while her painter's instinct guides the layering of pigment, ink, and collage elements. The "Relics" series, to which this piece belongs, evokes the idea of spiritual or cultural remnants - visual echoes from lost languages, sacred ruins, or dreamlike technologies. "CVII" (Roman numeral 107) places this work deep within a personal lexicon, as if each painting is an unearthed artifact in an ongoing, poetic excavation.

The result is both mysterious and tactile - a meditation on what is preserved, what is lost, and what quietly persists beneath the surface. Mayr invites the viewer to decipher, to feel, and to wonder. In "Relics - CVII", as in much of her oeuvre, the past is not fixed. It is layered, dynamic, and alive.
