Cecilia Mayr (Brazilian, b. 1955). "Mosaicos #M1" mixed media painting on paper, n.d. Signed at lower right and titled at lower left. A luminous patchwork of memory and meditation, "Mosaicos #M1" by Cecilia Mayr is a celebration of color, texture, and the emotive potential of structure. Eight chromatic squares, arranged in a balanced grid, emerge from a richly mottled surface of ochres, siennas, and smoldering earth tones. Each square pulses with layered pigment - sapphire, garnet, emerald, gold - contained yet softly dissolving at the edges, as though time and light have been gently at work. Surrounding them, the raw ground flickers with gestural marks, errant drips, and paper textures that recall ancient walls, weathered maps, or desert stone. Size of painting: 24" W x 16" H (61 cm x 40.6 cm); of frame: 34" W x 27" H (86.4 cm x 68.6 cm)
Mayr, born in Votuporanga, Brazil, brings a multicultural sensibility to her visual language. Her early training in philosophy, animation, and comic art in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro finds new resonance in this quiet but charged composition. Here, her Brazilian roots, European travels, and decades spent in the American Southwest coalesce in a singular voice - one equally attuned to geometry and intuition, discipline and spontaneity.
The title "Mosaicos", Portuguese for "mosaics", evokes more than design - it gestures toward identity itself as a composite of experience, culture, and spiritual resonance. This piece, though modern in execution, carries the reverent stillness of devotional abstraction. It may call to mind stained glass, woven tapestries, or tiled cathedral floors - but just as easily, it echoes arid Arizona canyons or sunlit stucco walls.
Mayr's long journey - from Brazil's animated studios to Phoenix's print workshops to galleries across London, New York, and Seattle - has yielded a visual language both grounded and transcendent. "Mosaicos #M1" invites the viewer into a meditative geometry, where pigment, paper, and memory fuse into something quietly radiant.
