Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. Attractive pottery canteen of a slightly flattened round form with a wide-mouthed spout branching off a narrow neck (to prevent evaporation) and flanking the globular neck and serving as handles are a pair of monkeys, both holding their hands to their mouths as if eating or licking the contents of the vessel. The surfaces painted with classic Chancay abstract geometric textile-inspired patterns running vertically down each side, and a step motif along top rim, all in black and cream hues. Size: 6.5" W x 8.125" H (16.5 cm x 20.6 cm)
