Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay/Ica, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A beautiful bichrome terracotta vessel with two pairs of amphibian creatures - frogs and long tailed tadpoles - perched upon the vessel's shoulders. The form is comprised of an ample globular body, those endearing, nearly in-the-round amphibians adorning the shoulders, and a tubular neck that gently flares to the rim. The surface is adorned with several registers (three on the upper body and one on the neck) of abstract geometric motifs such as spirals, concentric circles, hemispheres, and diagonal bands outlined in black and further decorated with dot motifs that may symbolize eggs and fertility given the presence of the frogs. In the Pre-Columbian world, the frog (rana) was associated with rain, the sustenance that it brings, and fertility. The amphibians are also extensively decorated with patterns - dots and striations - as was characteristic of ancient Peruvian pottery. A beautiful example, replete with impressive artistry and layers of symbolic meaning. Size: 7.35" in diameter x 5.85" H (18.7 cm x 14.9 cm)

- Condition: Rim has been expertly restored in two places; this is very difficult to see and unobtrusive. The frog and tadpole on one side have some small losses, mainly to the pigment, where they join. Otherwise in very fine condition with nice remaining pigment.
