Pre-Columbian, central coast Peru, Chancay culture., ca. 800 - 1200 CE. A beautiful textile panel fragment comprised of tightly woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers and painted with white, brown, and beige pigments to create the wondrous, abstract motifs. The rectangular panel features two full and two partial abstract S-shaped figures with layered triangular bodies filled with inversely corresponding serrations that coalesce in the middle to form a semicircular face with petite white eyes and mouth. The lower register features large spirals with diagonal stepped bars extending from some corners, and the exterior periphery features narrow fringe panels in light and dark hues. Custom display frame included. Size (textile): 11.25" W x 29.125" H (28.6 cm x 74 cm); (frame): 15.25" W x 33.375" H (38.7 cm x 84.8 cm)

- Condition: This is a fragment of a larger textile composition. Modern gray backing to one small area near periphery as shown. Losses and fraying to some interior and peripheral areas, with staining and fading to original pigment. Nice preservation to figural and geometric motifs throughout.
