Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Central Coast, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. An endearing standing figure comprised of slip painted earthenware, mold-made from two pieces and hand painted in hues of red, white, and black. The piece features characteristics embraced by the Chancay artisans including an enlarged head with a boldly delineated visage comprised of wide-open eyes, a protruding nose, cup-shaped ears, pursed lips with black tattoo marks, and elaborate face paint or tattoos. He stands with arms to chest and wears a grand headdress adorned with a textile-inspired pattern, a black loin cloth, black knee coverings, and white foot coverings. Perforated through shoulders for attachment or suspension. Such painted terracotta figurines have been uncovered from Chancay graves where they were placed by the indigenous for companionship into the next world. Size: 4.5" W x 10.25" H (11.4 cm x 26 cm)
