Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built pottery female star-gazer known as a cuchimilco that scholars posit were placed in tombs as companions or guardians of the deceased. The nude woman stands upon separated legs with delineated genitalia in front, holds cupped hands to the sides of her black-painted abdomen, and features a rather squat, compressed neck. Her face exhibits ovoid eyes, a pinched brow painted with a register of serrated lines and with a pair of perforations, red-and-black facial markings on her cheeks, and solid black pigment accentuating her ears, lips, eye lids, and brows. Size: 7.375" W x 10.375" H (18.7 cm x 26.4 cm)

Provenance: private Chicago, Illinois, USA collection, acquired in 1988
