Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built pottery jar depicting a squatting anthropomorphic figure. The rounded base boasts a pair of low-relief legs bent beneath a rotund body decorated in black pigment with a thin, segmented belt encircling the midsection. Applied arms are raised towards a minimalist visage defined by raised almond-shaped eyes with painted bottom lashes, a slender nose, pursed lips, and cupped ears, all beneath a wide brow and a cylindrical cap which doubles as the spout/rim. The effigy is further embellished with a headband detailed in horizontal V-shaped motifs which trace around the head to a small cape just beneath an applied loop handle on the verso. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 4" W x 8.25" H (10.2 cm x 21 cm).
