Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1300 CE. An endearing bi-chrome earthenware egg-shape bodied flute player effigy vessel with twin loop handles, the musician's head depicted on the bulbous neck with bulging coffee-bean shaped eyes, a protruding straight nose, large round ear ornaments, and a chocolate brown mask over his eyes - all beneath the headdress painted on the concave, cup-shaped mouth of the vessel. The figure holds a cylindrical wind instrument in both hands extending from long applied, coil-made arms, to his mouth. He dons a meticulously painted garment presenting intricate stylized geometric motifs inspired by Andean textile designs, all in rich chocolate brown pigment on a creamy white ground to enhance the already delightful scene. Size: 5.375" W x 6" H (13.7 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private Colorado Springs, Colorado USA collection, ex-Artemis Gallery, ex- Davis via descent, acquired between 1985 and 1995
