Lot 179C
Central Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. A charming Chancay ceramic effigy vessel in the form of an owl, modeled with rounded body, short tail, and upturned beak. The flaring neck is painted with a geometric lattice pattern, while additional black-on-cream painted bands accent the body and head. The birds circular eyes are applied in relief, giving the vessel a lively and expressive presence. The owl was a powerful nocturnal symbol in Chancay culture, associated with wisdom, mystery, and communication with the spirit world. Chancay potters were renowned for their effigy vessels and textiles, their ceramics often featuring animals, birds, and stylized anthropomorphic figures. Vessels like this example likely held ritual significance in funerary or ceremonial contexts. Size: 9" L x 5.625" H (22.9 cm x 14.3 cm)
