Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. A lovely textile panel fragment composed of tightly-woven natural cotton fibers in hues of cream, tan, beige, turquoise, chocolate, and umber. The panel depicts a repeating motif of abstract standing anthropomorphic figures, each with colorful ornamentation. The figures' eyes, mouths, ears, headbands, waists, phalluses, and feet are all decorated with brown and blue textile appliques, giving their monochromatic bodies a splash of color. A fine example of abstract anthropomorphic artistry! Mounted against a fabric-lined cardboard panel. Size (textile): 17.75" W x 15.25" H (45.1 cm x 38.7 cm); Size (backing): 19.875" W x 16" H (50.5 cm x 40.6 cm).
