Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fabulous doll formed from reed strands wrapped tightly around a pair of slender structural sticks that double as the figure's 'legs.' Colorful textile panels composed of tightly woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers create the beige-hued skirt as well as the red, yellow, and brown tunic, and the arms are formed from pink threads which shape the hands and individual fingers. The expressive visage is formed with concentric octagonal eyes, a crooked nose, a rectangular mouth with four tab-shaped teeth, and a wild coiffure which drapes to the bottom of the tunic fringe. Size: 5.5" W x 10" H (14 cm x 25.4 cm); 10.25" H (26 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985
