Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. This is a pair of carved wood standing male ancestor figures with lovely faces painted in red and black natural pigments. They have excellent noses and are also wearing woven bird pattern textile bands over chocolate gauze headbands. These figures strongly resemble the "false" wooden heads that were placed atop Chancay mummy bundles, and similar figures have been found wrapped and adorned with gauze and textile. Other examples have been found with feathered costumes, and it is almost certain that these figures would have had some kind of clothing when they were originally made. Figures like these were placed in altars or niches associated with the dead and other types of ceremonial architecture. Size of largest: 18.5" H (47 cm)

Compare with similar examples in Ancient Peruvian Wood Sculpture. A special exhibit in 1966 at Andre Emmerich Gallery
