Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1100 to 1400 CE. A textile figure constructed with a cylindrical body wrapped in woven fabric and secured at the waist with a red fiber sash. The head is formed from stitched panels of dyed cotton, with stylized features in red and brown creating a bold triangular face. Strands of human hair are twisted into cords and attached at the back of the head to represent a coiffure. The body is stuffed with sticks and plant fibers to provide internal support and shape. Such figures are commonly found in coastal Peruvian burials, dressed in miniature garments and likely intended as attendants or companions for the deceased. Size: 4" W x 11.75" H (10.2 cm x 29.8 cm)
