Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, Late Cupisnique period, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A hand-built pottery and highly burnished vessel with a flat base, a circular body with a sharply angled central carination, a planar shoulder, a stirrup-shaped handle, and a cylindrical spout with a gently flared lip, all presented in mottled hues of light and dark brown. The sloped upper body is adorned with five incised panels with latticework grounds, four with broad curvilinear bands and one with diagonal steps and sets of vertical bars. Size: 6.8" W x 9.4" H (17.3 cm x 23.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from the 1950s to the 1960s

  • Condition: Professionally repaired from multiple pieces, with restoration to areas of base and handles, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Minor abrasions and pitting to handle and spout, with fading and areas of fire-darkening to surface color. Light earthen deposits throughout. Nice incised details remaining. Old inventory label on base.
