Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. A beautiful bowl of a lightly-compressed spherical form, hand-carved from mottled brown stone with faint orange inclusions. The bowl has a rounded base, convex walls, and a deep interior cavity surrounded by a protruding rim. The body depicts a quartet of abstract mythological creature heads, each with large spiraling eyes, concentric circle earspools, a curled snout, and bared fangs, with a smaller serpentine-form animal projecting from their snout. Size: 7.375" W x 4.4" H (18.7 cm x 11.2 cm).
