Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. A rare blackware cylinder vessel, its tall, straight walls decorated with sweeping diagonal bands of incised hatching that spiral around the exterior in rhythmic order. The burnished surface bears the deep black luster characteristic of Chavin ceramics, achieved through careful firing in a reducing atmosphere. Chavin pottery is among the earliest highland traditions to employ complex symbolic decoration, often drawing upon textile patterns and abstracted forms that echo the culture's religious art. The swirling, incised bands here may evoke the dynamic movement of water, serpents, or woven design, aligning with Chavin's broader aesthetic of transformation and duality. Vessels such as this one would have been used in ceremonial contexts, perhaps for libations or offerings, and they embody the fusion of utility and sacred symbolism that defines Chavin art. Size: 4.8" Diameter x 5" H (12.2 cm x 12.7 cm)
