Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. An elegant, minimalist ceramic vessel from a culture who usually made their pottery strongly representational. The body is nearly spherical, standing atop a gently flattened base. The spout is wide where it meets the body, tapering to a narrow, everted rim. Aside from a small area above the base, the body is incised with tight, thin diagonal lines; four raised strips with applied toothed texture adorn the upper sides, spaced at 90 degree intervals. A lovely, rare example. Size: 6.15" W x 10.9" H (15.6 cm x 27.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950-1960s
