Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Chavin, 12th to 5th century BCE. A fantastic and highly wearable necklace, composed of thirteen large, cylindrical rock crystal beads and centered on one particularly large bead. They are strung together, separated by modern hematite beads. Rock crystal finds from the Chavin period are fascinating. Some researchers believe that rock crystal beads just like these show that the Chavin had developed the ability to shape convex lenses, perhaps for magnification or fire starting. Size: 25" L (of string); size of largest bead: 0.8" W x 1.45" H (63.5 cm; 2 cm x 3.7 cm)

Compare to a very similar necklace at the Art Institute of Chicago (Alsdorf Foundation Fund, 2002.7).
