Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. A large discoid mace head, hand-carved from a creamy beige-hued stone. The weapon exhibits a broad, spool-shaped body with a dramatic central carination, a flared rim on either end, and a biconically drilled socketing shaft through the body. Chavin mace heads would have been mounted atop a slender wooden pole and used in battle. However, this example was perhaps a votive funerary offering based on the absence of evidence corresponding with combative involvement. Size: 3.875" W x 2.5" H (9.8 cm x 6.4 cm); 3.9" H (9.9 cm) on included custom stand.
