Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. An attractive mace head that is hand-carved from light brown stone with a cylindrical socketing shaft and spiraling 'blades' with acutely angled edges. The smooth surface textures are pleasing to the touch. The Chavin culture does not seem to have been warlike based on scholarly interpretations and archaeological excavations, and their cultural expansion across the landscape was not violent - at least as far as archaeologists can find - until the very end of the period, when maces like this suddenly become evident. Size: 3.875" W x 2.8" H (9.8 cm x 7.1 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
