Description:

Cheryl Browder (American, active XX-XXI). "Sunlight and Shadows" oil pastels on paper, 2006. Signed at lower right. Date and title on verso. In this serene composition, Cheryl Browder captures the luminous interplay of light and shadow across a Colorado stream. A cascade of sunlight filters through the dense canopy, illuminating the cool surface of the water and the smooth, time-worn stones that punctuate its flow. The result is a vibrant study of atmosphere and reflection, rendered in Browder's signature representational style that merges immediacy with quiet contemplation. Browder, who lives and paints in Colorado, finds endless inspiration in the natural world around her. Initially trained in oils, she later turned to pastels for their tactile immediacy and the control they afford. The medium, as she explains, bridges the realms of drawing and painting, allowing her to respond intuitively to the colors, textures, and rhythms of the landscape. Size of pastel: 14" W x 8" H (35.6 cm x 20.3 cm); of frame: 22.25" W x 16.25" H (56.5 cm x 41.3 cm)

In "Sunlight and Shadows", Browder's mastery of oil pastel is evident in the delicate transitions of tone and her sensitivity to natural light. Each stroke captures the fleeting beauty of a specific moment in nature - an idea at the heart of her artistic philosophy.

Artist's statement: "My passion for painting began as a child and continues to this day. Living in Colorado, I only need to step outside to find endless inspiration. My representational style comes from a love of the landscape and my work is a personal and direct response to the subject. Every painting starts with an idea suggested by something in nature, the impact of one color against another, the light, it is this visual idea that inspires a painting. Initially trained in oils, something special happened when I first tried pastels. Pastels, for me, spans both drawing and painting. I love the immediacy and directness of approach. Pastels allow me more control and I have all the colors and values at my fingertips. Every painting is a challenge and opportunity to learn and improve. I strive to grow as an artist by constant study and hard work. Simply put, I love to paint, it brings me joy and hopefully to those who see it."
