Description:

Pre-Columbian, northern Chile, Mapuche people, ca. 1500 CE. A handsome pipe carved from a single piece of dark volcanic stone, with a smoothed surface and registers of incised motifs on its broad end. The chamber is in the center of the pipe, with a thin, raised rim. This style - the T-shape with the chamber in the center - was common in ritual pipe smoking in the ancient Andes. Pipes like this one also seem to have been common gifts given between different cultural groups throughout ancient Chile, and styles made in different regions have been found far from their origins. Size: 5.2" W x 0.7" H (13.2 cm x 1.8 cm); 2.4" H (6.1 cm) on included custom stand.
