Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A double chambered bridge-spout vessel, the front chamber adorned with a near miniature bird or perhaps turtle. When intact, this piece was a whistling vessel that produced music utilizing the principle that fluid would move from one chamber to another, thereby displacing the air in the second chamber which was then forced to move across the sounding edge of the whistle. The air was forced across the whistle in a relatively delicate manner, resulting in a pleasingly wavering sound. Though no longer functioning, this piece is intriguing from a historical, aesthetic, and iconographic standpoint. Size: 8-1/2"L x 6-1/4"H. Provenance: Ex-private Denver, CO collection acquired at New York auction house All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #109498

  • Condition: Repaired with losses to body and bird ornament as shown. No longer whistles.
