Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A mold-formed blackware pottery jar with a round but stable base, a wide body with tapered shoulders, a curving strap handle on the verso, and a conical spout on top. The obverse of the vessel depicts the head of the Maize God with a body comprised entirely of stylized ears of corn on the front and back. The handle bears a row of squat spines with incised zigzagging motifs, and traces of original white pigment are visible in some recessed areas. A fine example of Chimu pottery artistry! Size: 5.5" W x 6.9" H (14 cm x 17.5 cm).

Provenance: ex-private Sobredo collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, acquired in the 1970s
