Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1250 to 1450 CE. A lovely mold-formed blackware vessel with a planar base, a wide ovoid body, an arching stirrup-shaped handle, and a cylindrical spout. Each side of the body exhibits a pair of molded panels, each depicting an abstract, long-necked avian figure against a stippled ground. Two of these birds - which are pelican-like - clench fish in their beaks. Highly burnished and covered in black pigment, this is a wonderful example from ancient Peru! Size: 4.4" W x 8" H (11.2 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
