Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu culture, ca. 900 to 1470 CE. A masterfully crafted blackware stirrup-spout vessel depicting a bound deer, rendered with remarkable naturalism and subtle psychological tension. The animal lies recumbent with its limbs drawn close to the body, the forelegs tied together at the fetlocks, while its head turns slightly to the side with wide, alert eyes and upright ears that convey an almost startled awareness. The form is simultaneously elegant and poignant, balancing graceful modeling with an unmistakable sense of restraint. The stirrup spout, a hallmark of Andean ceramic tradition, rises in a broad arch from the animal's back and terminates in a cylindrical neck, designed both for controlled pouring and to minimize evaporation in the arid coastal climate. The vessel is burnished to a deep, glossy black, a finish achieved through reduction firing, which was a hallmark of Chimu ceramic technology. Size: 6.5" L x 11.5" W x 10.3" H (16.5 cm x 29.2 cm x 26.2 cm)

Deer were highly significant within the Andean world, valued for their meat, hides, and ritual associations. In Chimu iconography, scenes of bound deer may reflect hunting practices, sacrificial offerings, or symbolic representations of control over nature and the animal world. The tied posture suggests that this vessel may have served as a ceremonial reminder of the relationship between humans, animals, and the cycles of ritualized consumption and sacrifice.

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report will accompany the item upon purchase.
