Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1250 to 1450 CE. A lovely blackware mold-made double stirrup vessel, the upper and lower walls of the corsetted body mold-pressed with four coatimundi against a stippled ground. A fabulous example of Chimu blackware pottery, replete with an elegant form and rich iconography. In the Pre-Columbian world, the raccoon-like coatimundi (or coati) was easily tamed, and its funny antics made it a popular pet. What's more, scholars believe that the ancients believed coatimundi possessed supernatural powers. Size: 7.25" W span from spout to spout x 6.5" H (18.4 cm x 16.5 cm)
