Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE. A fun blackware double-chambered whistling vessel with a smooth, matte finish and a sculpted parrot with a long, downward-curving beak seated on the front end above the puck-like chamber. A tall, tapering, conical spout rises from the other side of the chamber, which is also puck-like; between the two chambers is a pronounced conical foot. Each puck side has a relief image of an armadillo. When poured this vessel was designed to whistle in order to prevent anyone from swiping the precious liquid within. Size: 6.25" W x 6.7" H (15.9 cm x 17 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA; purchased in Lima, Peru in June, 1988
