Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1300-1500 CE. This magnificent Chimu silver vessel assumes the form of a commanding noble. The deep, repousse facial features of the visage, with downturned jowls, striking ovoid eyes, and bird beak nose, prominent headdress, and beaded necklace bring this piece to life. On the back of the figures head are two ears of maize, a prevalent crop with sacred associations in Peru. The ancients fermented corn to make chicha, a frothy beverage created for ceremonial occasions and celebrations. This beaker may in fact have been used to offer chicha to a deity or a departed relative as elaborate vessels such as this were traditionally used in libation rituals prior to being placed in the burial of an important person to honor and accompany him in the afterlife. 7-1/8"T x 3-1/2"D at widest Provenance: Ex-Michael Tomeo Collection, Ex-Artemis Gallery All items in this auction have been legally acquired, are legal to sell, and guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
