Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chimu, ca. 1200 CE. Large greyware stirrup vessel ornamented with a representation of animals treasured by the Peruvians. A pair of jaguars creep across the bodies of the front and back of the vessel; another pair, this time two frogs, perch on both sides of the handle which is decorated with a procession of ten aviary forms on each side. Finally a miniature monkey grips the base of the spout in all his simian glory. 10"T x 5-1/2"W x 6"D Provenance: Ex-Van Buskirk Collection, acquired at a major New York auction.
