Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1000 CE. A large and lovely polychrome textile fragment composed of tightly-woven natural fibers in hues of crimson, cream, topaz, taupe, and beige. Central to the textile is a large standing figure, dressed in white, with bi-pronged feet, three-fingered hands, projecting ears, and a rabbit-eared headdress. This anthropomorphic depiction represents one of the Lord Kings of the Chimu people, though exactly which ruler remains unknown. Three abstract avian figures rest above a horizontal band of colors, and perhaps the arm of another figure is seen to the Lord King's right. Mounted on black display textile. Size (textile): 6.75" W x 10.625" H (17.1 cm x 27 cm); size (backing): 21.5" W x 25.25" H (54.6 cm x 64.1 cm).
