Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty to Republic era, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A brass statue of the Taoist deity Hsuan Tien Shang-ti, also known as Xuanwi, Xuandi, or Zhenwu. The figure is depicted seated in a long robe, with remains of pigments still visible on the surface. His waist is tied with a sash, and his feet are bare as he sits on a block-shaped seat with an open underside, leading into the hollow interior. Hsuan Tien Shang-ti, often considered the Highest Emperor of the Dark Heavens, is a prominent figure in Taoism, representing martial prowess, protection, and spiritual authority. Known as a protector deity, particularly for Taoist practitioners and soldiers, he is revered for his role in guarding against evil forces and bringing harmony. His symbolism is deeply connected to Taoist cosmology and the balance between the forces of nature. This statue was likely used in a family shrine, particularly by a scholar or Chinese official, as a form of reverence and protection. Size: 4.75" W x 9" H (12.1 cm x 22.9 cm)
