Lot 95
East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A pottery tomb figure of a horse and rider created as a mingqi (spirit object) to accompany the deceased in the afterlife. The horse stands powerfully with a strong neck, flared nostrils, and pricked ears, its modeled form capturing the prized equestrian of Han culture. The rider, seated upright in a red-painted tunic with arms positioned to hold reins, conveys calm command. Cold-painted pigments - red, green, white, pink, and black - still cling to the surface, enlivening the horse's saddle blanket and tack as well as the rider's face and garments. Horses symbolized status, military strength, and supernatural favor, making their presence in elite tombs an emblem of power and enduring prestige beyond death. Size: 11.75" L x 12" H (29.8 cm x 30.5 cm)
Note: XRF analysis shows red pigmentation is composed of cinnabar. If you win this lot, please use care in handling this piece and wash hands after touching any area.
